The New Haven Preservation Trust is the private not for profit agency that corresponds to the HDC at a local level. Our funds are entirely derived from our members as donors and a few small grants for specific programs. New Haven has eighteen historic districts listed with the National Register of Historic Places, and a number of other buildings that are individually listed on the National Register. In addition, there are now three historic districts listed under City zoning law: Quinnipiac (in Fair haven), Wooster Square, and Oyster Point (aka City Point). For the three local districts the Historic Districts Commission (HDC) functions like a zoning board for properties, issuing a certificate of appropriateness for approved projects. This is a volunteer citizen government board working as part of city government, and includes as Commissioners Trust Board members Bob Gryzwacz, Kathy Bennett, and Marianne Mazan. For other issues affecting recognized historic properties like the National Register districts, The HDC has an advisory role. The HDC has a small budget from the City for mailings and other operations.
